BHAG!
What is a BHAG? Well, it stands for “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” It was proposed by James Collins and Jerry Porras in 1996. They defined a BHAG as “… an audacious 10-to-30-year goal to progress towards an envisioned future.”
A true BHAG is clear and compelling, serves as unifying focal point of effort, and acts as a clear catalyst for team spirit. It has a clear finish line, so the organization can know when it has achieved the goal; people like to shoot for finish lines.
—Collins and Porras, 1996
For fun, here are a few BHAG’s of companies around the world:
Amazon: Every book, ever printed, in any language, all available in less than 60 seconds. Also: Earth's most customer centric company.
Google: Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful
Microsoft: A computer on every desk and in every home.
A key benefit of having a BHAG is the fact that it changes mindset and focus of the people who have one. You cannot achieve a BHAG by doing the same thing you have always done. You have to continually improve and think outside the box and break away from the ordinary. A BHAG brings with it a sense of urgency and requires people to behave differently.
Do you know what you are working towards? What are your goals in life, at work and sport? By knowing what you want to do and accomplish, you are then able to set goals and make decisions that are leading you towards your destination, not away from it.
